Recreational Classes
7 Years and Up
Recreational classes meet at the same time and day each week. Once your child turns 7, they’ll transition into our Recreational Program, a skill-based program designed to meet gymnasts exactly where they are. Athletes are placed in the class that best matches their current skill level, ensuring they’re challenged, confident, and progressing at a pace that’s right for them. Not sure which class is the best fit? Just email us—we’re happy to help guide you!
Beginner 1:
Beginner 1 is an introduction to gymnastics fundamentals. Recommended for youth participants ages 7 and over, the class is structured to introduce, drill and eventually perfect a basic skill set for athletes to build on. Examples of skills this class will be working on are introduction to handstands, cartwheels, pull overs, casts, explosive drills for running and jumping, supplemental strength & conditioning and low to medium beam activities. The goal at completion of this class is for your child to feel strong and confident to add onto the skills they have learned in Beginner 1.
Beginner 2:
Beginner 2 is for youth participants 7 and over who have either (1) acquired all necessary skills in Six Pea or (2) acquired all necessary skills in Beginner 1. This class will begin to fine tune skills acquired in Beginner 1 as well as continue to build and increase the level of difficulty. Drills learned in Beginner 1 will transform into independent skills. Participants in Beginner 2 will gain exposure to skills like bridge kickovers, back bends, acro skills on low beam, handstand flatbacks and back hip circles.
Beginner 3:
In the Beginner 3 class, youth participants can expect the level of challenge to significantly increase. Things like form, shape and strength will be referenced more regularly in all skills in Beginner 3. The class is structured to hit briefly on the foundational skills they have acquired in Beginner 1 and 2. At Beginner 3, you will begin to notice the strength built from Beginner 1 & 2 being regularly applied in the skills being taught. The skills include pull overs & back hip circles independently, bar dismounts, beam skills applied on medium and high beams, front limber, intro to back handsprings, and handstand flatback vaults. Athletes in this group will continue to grow strength and flexibility along with these skills.
Intermediate:
In our Intermediate class, youth participants will begin to work on skills that are very commonly recognized. The foundation of Beginner 1, 2 and 3 will be touched on, not as a needed skill but as a kinesthetic reminder while working on an increased level of skills. Athletes in this class will spend more time in the gym as necessary to successfully and safely acquire the skills needed to advance. Skills regularly worked on in Intermediate will include back handsprings, front handsprings, increase in difficulty on vaulting skills from Beginner 3, connecting bar skills, dismounting independently, and meeting skill requirements on the high beam.
Advanced:
Our Advanced class is our highest level of recreational gymnastics provided at Golden Gate. In this class, athletes are encouraged to work towards three traditional paths: (1) a path of competitive gymnastics, (2) a path of acquiring all skills recreationally which can assist in supporting their time in other sports like dance, diving, cheer, etc. and (3) a path where the athlete works at their own pace to acquire the skills needed and ages out of the program naturally. At Golden Gate Gymnastics, staff are here to encourage and support any route each individual athlete is looking to pursue, even if that path changes. In the advanced class, you will notice skills like front handspring vaults, Double back hip circles, intro to kips, high bar work, more acro & dance on the high beam like back walkovers and split jumps, round off back handsprings on floor with intro to flips.
